Castle-building in France: Vauban and the Sun King

In exploring the history of Nord-Pas de Calais in France we discover the story of Vauban the military engineer who built defensive fortifications for Louis XlV, the Sun King. The revolutionary engineer created ways to deceive the attackers, integrate castles into the landscape and minimize the impact of siege war on the soldiers who defended them. As testimony to his genius many of the castles survive. We visit Lille, Montreuil, Ambleteuse and the underground passages of Arras.
